The European Innovation Council (EIC) was launched by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on March 18th 2021 with the aim “to support breakthrough technology and scale-up disruptive innovation” across Europe. The EIC is a new component of Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion from 2021-2027 that follows on from the completed Horizon 2020 programme.
The EIC represents the most ambitious innovation initiative that Europe has undertaken, with a dedicated budget of €10 billion for the period 2021-2027. It has a mission to identify, develop and scale-up breakthrough technologies and disruptive innovations that may be too risky for private investors by providing “an ecosystem that gives entrepreneurs every opportunity to create a world-leading company”, and by providing support through a number of funding opportunities.
